Climate vs. Weather...these two words sound so similar but they actually mean very different things.
⋒
Weather represents the day-to-day changes in our atmosphere, it is what we experience on a daily basis, it is what we mean when we say "it's raining" or "snowing" outside...which is exactly what is happening outside my window right now by the way.
⋒
Climate on the otherhand is the long-term view of weather that is analyzed over decades and centuries. Climate looks at trends in weather data that show changes in ocean temperature, precipitation, and wind.
⋒
So why is this distinction important? Well when scientists talk about global warming and you see nothing but snow outside your window it can be confusing. Climate change is a big concept that is hard for most people to really wrap their heads around in the way we can weather.
⋒
We also are taught as kids that we "can't control the weather", which when climate is confused for weather can make it difficult for people to really see how our actions are impacting climate change at all.
⋒
But our actions (well mostly 100 corrupt companies actions) are impacting our climate. 99.9% of scientists agree on this and if you know anything about scientists you know that that doesn't happen often.
⋒
So the next time you hear someone confuse weather with climate change don't roll your eyes, educate them. Education is empowering, and we need all the empowered folks we can get.

Every morning I like to come downstairs and open a few of the windows to get some fresh air circulating through our home. In the winter if you live in colder climates it can be tempting to never open those windows because the air outside is freezing, but we all need fresh air. 🌿 Want to know a fun public health fact? Colds and flus are more common in the winter because humidity is lower and air circulation is much less, which allows these virus particles to circulate and stay in the air. 🌿 So wrap yourself in a blanket and open those windows! Just for a few minutes, and get some fresh air circulating in your home.

People need plants to thrive...it's biochemical, and no I'm not talking just about the kind you can eat.
⋒
Being surrounded by plants in nature has been biochemically proven to reduce our stress response and lower blood pressure within 15 minutes of being outside. Our bodies were designed to be out in nature and we are just beginning to truly understand the implications associated with a mostly indoor work/lifestyle.
⋒
But what if you can't get outside during the day? According to a study published in the Journal of Physiological Anthropology, interaction with indoor plants can also reduce physiological and psychological stress.
⋒
So yes those indoor plants you love so much are indeed making you happier, not to mention cleaning and purifying the air around you. ⋒
So here is your prescription for plants. Turn that office or cubical into a live in jungle and let this be one of the most enjoyable ways you ever went about reducing stress.

Something I have been noticing since the sustainability movement really gained momentum is how much we are blurring the lines between what it means to "live sustainably" and what it means to be a "conscious consumer". While being a conscious consumer is a part of living sustainably, it isn't even close to being the only part and it certainly is not the most important part.
⋒
If we allow sustainability to become entirely consumed by what we buy (which is steeped in privilege) we run the risk of isolating anyone who feels connected to this movement but incapable financially of investing in this change. The moment we make the sustainability movement exclusive we ruin the chances of it ever creating the change we need it to.
⋒
I believe that to live sustainably means to live with a deep connection with our bodies and nature. This is something that regardless of your socioeconomic status every single human is capable of because it is built into our DNA. This connection should be the main focus of the sustainability movement, it is what our ancestors deeply understood and it is something that cant be bought but can create the ripples that lead to community activism and policy change.
⋒
This connection is our moral compass that keeps us from compromising the needs of the future for the needs of the present, and it should be what we are the most focused on fostering today.
⋒
I still of course believe that our purchases matter, but this connection matters more. .

When it comes to creating sustainable lifestyle change focusing your attention on quality may be the most impactful and change provoking thing you can do. While our grandparents grew up in an era that celebrated and supported quality in food, fashion, home goods, etc. we, on the other hand, have literally been programmed to expect things to break, and so they do.
⋒
This is why I love that @buymeonce #partner has made it easier for people to discover the highest quality items that are made to last so that we can literally consume less. Because it doesn't really matter if the items you are buying are made "sustainably" or not if they all still end up as waste.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
**Citrus Vinegar Cleaning Concentrate**
- Fill a large mason jar with citrus peels (grapefruit, limes, lemons, oranges, clementines)
- Once the mason jar is full cover the peels with white distilled vinegar (you also can choose to add some fresh rosemary or lavender sprigs)
- Cover and store for 6-8 weeks, the longer it sits the more concentrated it will become and the less vinegary it will smell (citrus vinegar)
- Dilute 1:1 with water when ready to use (see my stories for more details)
