What Are The Well Essential Elements?

I really can't believe that it has only been just over a month since The Well Essentials officially launched. It honestly feels like so much longer than that since so much has happened over the past five weeks! With the holidays came so so so many delicious recipe creations, and lots of fun spent with friends and family, but I recently realized that in the midst of all the chaos and deliciously health inspired cookie recipes I forgot to give you all a break down of what the foundation of The Well Essentials stands on...The Well Essential Elements. 

When I initially started this journey of forming my own business, I knew that I wanted to share something incredibly special with the world. I wanted to reach in the lives and homes of as many people as I could, and help people discover just how balanced their bodies are meant to feel, and how health and happiness go hand in hand. Note that I did not say being at X weight, wearing a size 2, or having perfect hair/skin go hand in hand with happiness, I said health. 

This word I think is something that over the years has been distorted so many times to be something very exclusive. Like if you are going to be healthy then you must be X BMI, or you must be following a Paleo Diet, or you must be Vegan, and obviously that also means that you must be a yogi, tri-athlete, weight-lifter, etc. You get where I am going with this. Health thanks to the lovely world of marketing and one to many doctors or "nutritionists" trying to promote the latest diet trend have somehow managed to literally trick the world into believing that unless you fall into one of the above categories, there is probably no way that you are going to be healthy. But this is where they are wrong. 

The world health organization's definition of health I think says it best and is by far my favorite in describing what health should mean, and objectively shows us just how far we have strayed from the true definition.


Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.

Did you catch that last part? Health is not only about the absence of disease or infirmity (physical or mental weakness). Health is about discovering a state of absolutely complete physical, mental, AND social well-being. In other words it is about discovering a personal state of balance where our bodies, our minds, and our spirits are able to flourish. The definition in its root talks about a very positive way of living that seems to avoid so many of us so well. 

In a nutshell this is why I choose to found The Well Essentials which is based on a series of eight special essential elements that promote and foster a positive environment for achieving a complete and balanced state of health, and in turn a very happy life. 


Well Essential #1: Nourishment

Food is meant to nourish our body, from our cells all the way to our hair, and skin. By choosing fresh fruits and vegetables, organic dairy products, and fermented foods that are fabulous for our gut, we are choosing to support our body's ability to function the best it can. Don't forget about water too! We need it to thrive, and probably take it for granted the most.

Well Essential #2: Digestion

Have you ever heard the saying "you are what you eat", well that's only partially correct, because actually "you are what you digest". It honestly doesn't matter if you have the cleanest diet, or drink liters of water a day. Without a well functioning digestive system your body may not be able to properly absorb and utilize all the good you are putting into it. WELL ESSENTIAL #3: rest

We live in a culture where somehow rest has become less of a necessity and more of a luxury. Well, I am here to stand up for sleeping, because without optimal rest our bodies are incapable of functioning to the best of their ability. When we don't allow ourselves to rest, our adrenals become fatigued leading to hormonal imbalance, and altered metabolism. 

WELL ESSENTIAL #4: movement

Moving your body is so important to achieving a healthy life. By moving our bodies everyday we increase our endorphin and serotonin levels, making us (you guessed it!) happier, which helps combat stress, and maintain a healthy weight. But finding balance when it comes to fitness is also important. Focus on consistency, and find what works best for you. 

WELL ESSENTIAL #5: sustainability

This beautiful world we live in is the greatest gift we were ever given. Luckily what is best for our bodies, tends to run in line with what is best for the environment as well. By choosing natural body products, household cleaners made without chemicals, and organic foods free from pesticides, preservatives, and artificial colors we are choosing to support a healthier earth. WELL ESSENTIAL #6: exploration

Whether you love to travel the world (hey there fellow wanderlust-ers!) or prefer to stay close to home, exploration is an inherent part of being human. If you ever watch a toddler see something new for the first time, their reaction is captivating. The pure joy, and curiosity they feel is something we all have within us, and is connected to how we view the world around us. WELL ESSENTIAL #7: spirituality & reflection

This may be one of the most critical elements to find balance in because it requires getting outside of your own busy mind, and taking a hard, honest, look at your life. Part of living a healthy life is being able to adapt and grow with grace. Yet without some kind of spirituality and self reflection, it is nearly impossible to grow into the people we are meant to be.

WELL ESSENTIAL #8: love

If I asked you to list the three people in your life who you love the most, would YOU make it into that list? Loving yourself is at the center of health because it is what motivates us to make the best choices in our lives. It also is important to surround yourself with people who love and care about you. Love is so much more than a feeling, it is a vital part of life that makes us feel alive.

I hope you all enjoyed this little insight into the foundational elements behind The Well Essentials. While creating delicious recipes, and sharing information about nutrition is absolutely one of my life's greatest passions, I also am excited to dive further into these other important elements to health and happiness as The Well Essentials continues to grow. This whole-bodied, integrative philosophy to health and happiness is something I believe so strongly in and am excited to share with as many people as I can in this community.
