How To Prioritize Slow Living In A Fast Paced World + Fluffy Gluten Free Oat & Yogurt Belgian Waffles
Ask just about anyone you know these days and they most likely will agree that life is moving FAST. Work hours have gotten longer, time spent out in nature has decreased while time spent in front of screens has increased and guess what – people as a whole are feeling pretty stressed out.
But how did we let this happen? When did we decide that it was okay to only get on average 5 hours of sleep? When did we determine that breakfast should be taken “on-the-go”? That lunch hour could be skipped, and that we no longer had the time for something as simple and joyful as a cup of coffee.
Somewhere along the way, we allowed for convenience and the “hustle” mentality to seep so far into our daily lives that we started to think it was normal. But it doesn’t have to be this way, and over the last year, I have really been challenging the “hustle” mentality by trying to prioritize more slow moments into each and every day.
Luckily, there are also companies like Green Valley Organics who are challenging this mentality as well, and are passionate about helping people slow down and nourish their bodies and souls with slower moments, and really delicious food!
As a dietitian, this makes me so happy to see because slowing down especially when it comes to our food is something I am so passionate about. When our bodies are stressed we don’t digest our food as well, we don’t make the same choices we would if we were eating mindfully, and we don’t allow ourselves to truly enjoy our food with friends and family as we would if we allowed ourselves to slow down and enjoy the moment.

5 Tips To Prioritize Slow Living In A Fast Paced World
01: Notice The Beauty In Everyday Moments
Each and everyday there is a sunrise and a sunset, there are trees blooming, dogs playing, kids laughing – you get the picture. While everyday may not be all rainbows and butterflies there still are small, wonderful things that happen each and everyday, and it’s time we started noticing them.
So get your head out of your phone and on your walk to work, or during your lunch break, take 15 minutes to focus on all the BEAUTIFUL things that are happening around you. You will be amazed by how powerful this simple act can be on your mood and mindset.
02: Wake Up 20 Minutes Earlier And Embrace Slower Mornings
I know that mornings can be tough, but I want to challenge that. If it is possible, see if you can wake up 15-20 minutes earlier so that you can have a slower, mindful morning. Maybe you meditate, read, or simply enjoy sitting with your coffee and a bowl of yogurt in silence. Starting your mornings off in a slow, mindful manner can have a profound effect on the rest of your day. So if you do one thing, I would recommend trying to work on bringing a slower morning into your daily life.
03: Do A Digital Detox
We are all too connected to technology and we aren’t taking as many breaks as we should be. I am 100% guilty of this, but I also know that I feel really good when I take a break from technology and do a mini-digital detox.
So if you are feeling a little burnt out from technology I recommend starting small and choosing 2 days a week where all technology is off by 5PM. Then see if you can begin to expand this digital detox into all your evenings and weekends. Every person is different so don’t be too hard on yourself and enjoy your digital detox, however long or short it may be.
04: Connect With Nature
Research has shown that just 15 minutes spent outside in nature can reduce a person's cortisol levels (our bodies primary stress hormone) by over 15%!
So when it comes to reducing stress in your life and slowing down my best advice is to get outside, turn your phone on airplane mode, and notice how your body is able to immediately relax. Spending just 15 minutes or more each day outside can have profound impacts on your health and overall mindset.
05: Make A Special #Dairymoments Breakfast
This may be my favorite way to really start the day of right with a nourishing breakfast made with my favorite Full-Fat Lactose Free Yogurt by Green Valley Organics. I honestly love creating a nourishing yogurt bowl during the weekdays, and on the weekends will make these Fluffy Gluten Free Oat and Yogurt Belgian Waffles. I then will spend some time reading and just enjoying the delicious food that I am fortunate to be able to nourish my body with. bringing a slower morning into your daily life.
Luckily for you I am sharing the recipe for these amazing waffles with you today and I promise that they are sure to quickly become a family favorite. The only rule when it comes to these waffles is that they should be enjoyed technology free, ideally with a nice book, and a homemade cappuccino.
Fluffy Gluten Free Oat and Yogurt Belgian Waffles
Makes roughly 12 small waffles - Serves 4
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 2 cups gluten-free oat flour
- ½ teaspoon Salt
- 2 Eggs
- 2/3 cups nondairy milk
- 1 cup Green Valley Organics Full Fat Lactose-Free Yogurt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
Blueberry Sauce Ingredients
- 2 cups frozen blueberries
- 1 tablespoon Honey
- 2 teaspoons corn starch
- ½ cup water
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 cup chopped strawberries
- ½ pint fresh blueberries
- Maple Syrup
- Green Valley Organics Lactose Free Butter
Combine baking soda, baking powder, gluten free oat flour, and salt into a large mixing bowl.
Whisk dry ingredients until well combined.
Next, combine eggs, milk, yogurt, and vanilla is a medium size mixing bowl.
Whisk wet ingredients together until well combined.
Add wet ingredients into dry ingredients and whisk well until a smooth mixture forms.
Heat your Belgian Waffle Maker and spray waffle trays with coconut oil.
Add a large spoonful of the waffle batter to each square and the center of the Belgian waffle maker tray
Cook for roughly 3 minutes and then remove from waffle maker
Stack on a plate and top with homemade blueberry sauce, Green Valley Organics Lactose Free Butter, and fresh berries.
Blueberry Sauce Directions
Combine all blueberry sauce ingredients in a small saucepan on the stove over medium heat.
Stir consistently for roughly 5 minutes or until the berries begin to soften and the mixture begins to thicken into the consistency of a sauce.
Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly before pouring onto waffles.
Store in a mason jar in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
